Re-awaken your taste buds with tart, tangy dried gooseberries

Re-awaken your taste buds with tart, tangy dried gooseberries, the South American Inca berry that was introduced to the Cape in 1808 and never left – in fact it’s now better known as the Cape gooseberry. Gooseberries have recently been rediscovered as a health superfood, and we’re glad they’re back! Each of these delicious berries are bursting with nutrients, especially Vitamin C, pectin and bioflavonoids (bioflavenoids, also known as Vitamin P, are essential for healthy blood. They also complement Vitamin C to give us immunity against winter colds). They are the only known plant-based source of Vitamin B12, essential for metabolism. The high pectin content and mild acidity make dried gooseberries a safe laxative. With healthy quantities of Vitamin A, calcium, iron and phosphorus, dried gooseberries make the perfect snack to add to trail mix, sprinkle over your muesli, sneak into fruit salad or eat straight from the packet. They can even be stewed and served with honey and cream. Nature’s Choice Dried Gooseberries come from the Keisie Valley near Montagu, where they are picked in perfect plumpness, dried in special ovens without sugar or preservatives, and brought to you with all the goodness intact.

Enjoy this sub-tropical delight in the form of juice-infused cranberries - no sucrose added!!

Cranberries and pineapple – what a wonderful combination! Now you can enjoy this sub-tropical delight in the form of juice-infused cranberries, where superior-grade cranberries are plumped up with pineapple juice, then dried to a chewy all-natural sweetness. This latest taste-craze is yours to be savoured with Nature’s Choice Juice-infused Cranberries. Eat them straight from the packet, add them to salads or over breakfast cereal – or make up a deluxe trail mix by adding almonds and shaved coconut. The health benefits of cranberries are well-established: the anti-oxidant properties of the berries have classified them as a super-food. Not only anti-oxidant (which protects you against disease and ageing) but anti-inflammatory as well, cranberries are now shown to have significant effects in fighting cancer. It’s not often you get such a good-tasting medicine!

The taste of the tropics and the perfect snack.

The taste of the tropics and the perfect snack, either on its own or mixed with other dried foods and nuts. Papaya is an alkaline fruit containing papain, which is a useful digestive aid and can soothe an upset stomach or relieve constipation. The fruit is also high in fibre. It nourishes our endocrine system and helps the body to produce more essential amino acids that activate human growth hormones (HGH). These hormones are important for cell rejuvenation.

Papaya when dried loses none of its food value and it is surprisingly high in many vital minerals: beta-carotene, vitamin C, bioflavenoids, potassium, magnesium and calcium and antioxidants.

Nature’s Choice diced and dried papaya – either on its own or mixed with other dried fruit and nuts – makes terrific trail mix or a lunch-box filler. It can be eaten straight from the packet, added to smoothies or sprinkled over fruit salad or breakfast foods for additional tasty chewiness.

Medjool dates are the most treasured variety of date.

Known as the ‘King of Dates’, Medjool dates are the most treasured variety of date because they are exceptionally big, contain a large amount of ‘fruit meat’ and are extremely sweet. Despite the sweetness, a Medjool date only contains about 45 calories, so it is the ideal guilt-free dessert or snack. Remove the pip, fill with nuts, cream cheese or any other filling, or serve with a dollop of whipped cream. If soaked in a little warm water and then pureed, dates can be used as a natural sweetener in cooking and baking, or as a spread.

Dates are a natural sweet and a good source of fibre. They contain more potassium than bananas, as well as a high percentage of B-complex vitamins.

Nature’s Choice Medjool dates are fat free, sodium free and sulphur free. Keep refrigerated.
