If you are of the opinion that an “Eat-as-much-as-you-like Diet” is just too good to be true, then please follow the logic in this article and discover for yourself just how easy it is to lose weight – naturally.

The information in this document could put an end to your weight problems for ever, so please, sit back, relax, and give this document your undivided attention - it is the product of over 25 years of hands-on experience. The information that you are about to read is gilt-edged, tried-and-tested truth.

For ten years my wife and I conducted seven- to ten-day live-in health seminars throughout South Africa. You can read more about the actual program that we used at this link. As expected, the program was very effective in helping delegates to overcome all kinds of ailments. One of the more marked benefits of the program, however, and one that we did not plan on or expect, was that after the seminar all who continued to follow the program lost weight at a rate that was truly astounding – up to 5kg per week – and this without having to starve in any way.

This rate of weight loss continued until they reached their natural body weight.

Within just a few weeks, those who continued with the program had to visit the tailor for major clothing alterations (so be prepared) . . . women who had triple chins slimmed down to their normal body weight, and chubby young girls simply melted down and amazed everyone as their long-concealed beauty came to the fore.

At first we did not quite understand why everyone lost weight so effortlessly, but now that we do understand, we are thrilled to share our discovery with you.

Before continuing, may I again urge you to relax, there is nothing to pay and no gimmick attached.

First Principle – Ask The Right Questions

If we need to lose a few kilograms, the first question we need to ask ourselves is not, How can I lose weight? but Why did I gain weight in the first place?

This is where most “quick-fix” diets fall apart, for the simple reason that it is impossible to permanently lose weight until such time as we have learnt how to permanently avoid gaining weight.

So if some or other diet advocates a starvation type program, or if it offers you some magical supplements along with some magical suggestions, and it does not address the factors that caused you to gain weight in the first place, you can only really expect short-term results at best.

It is because of this obvious and very common oversight that . . .

`Ninety-nine percent of people who go on a diet regain all the weight or more within two years. (Ann Louise Gittleman, M.S., Beyond Pritikin, p.45)

It is no surprise, therefore, that more and more people are becoming disenchanted with diets. After all, most diets recommend short-term measures, and short-term measures can only ever achieve short-term results.

This diet, however, is so “comfortable” and so logical, and it has so many positive spin-offs, that it persuades even the most skeptical dieter to put it to the test – and it really works.

Second Principle – It’s not how much you eat, but what you eat.

This diet begins where any rational diet must begin, and where most diets do not begin, and that is with food quality. As such, this diet does not focus on what you should not eat, but on what you should eat. The rationale behind this thinking will become apparent as we proceed.

As regards food quality, let’s consider the process that converts brown rice into polished white rice. This process destroys plus/minus . . .

70% of the vitamin B3 (niacin),

80% of the vitamin B1,

90% of the vitamin B6,

50% of both the manganese and the phosphorus,

60% of the iron, and

90% of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids in the rice?

This, of course, just does not make sense? Why would intelligent people take the perfect foods of nature and render them almost nutritionally useless by removing most of their vital nutriments? What makes even less sense, is the fact that this almost universal practice is carried out in the name of “food science”?

Dr Zehr is as bewildered as we are by this tragic process. Here is what he has to say about food refining:

“Take beautiful whole grain and strip it of the fiber which the body needs for proper bowel function. Then, rob it of the life-giving germ and the endosperm that contain vitamins, minerals and protein. Next, apply chlorine dioxide gas to bleach what remains. Now that it looks beautifully white, is insect proof (insects cannot survive on it!), and has an indefinite shelf-life, sell it to every baker in the land and let them bake lifeless bread to form the main staple of the nation’s diet. Oh, by the way, since the flour has been robbed of its wealth and natural riches, add a trace of synthetic vitamins and call it “enriched.” In case you are not yet convinced, here is one more point to consider: white flour is more effective as a wallpaper paste than as a food.” (Dr Albert Zehr, Healthy Steps, pp.7-8)

As a result of food refining, the great majority of people, most of whom would never dream of filling their motor cars with 20 octane fuel, are unwittingly trying to fuel their lives with “20 octane” foods – and the end result is a world filled with sickly, energy-less, overweight people.

About Refind Foods

Refined foods, of course, would include white pasta, white rice, white sugar, white flour, margarine and common cooking oils. Combinations of these denatured products are also used to produce most processed and packaged “supermarket” foods, including sweets, cereals, cakes, biscuits and bread. Even “brown” bread and “whole wheat” flour are often made up of primarily white flour, to which a little molasses has been added for color, and to which a little bran has been added back in an effort to fool the consumer into believing that it is the real thing.

Refined foods are high in carbohydrates, very low on fiber, and very low on vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Sugar is the doyen of refined foods in that it is an empty calorie, in other words, it contains no vitamins, minerals or trace elements whatsoever – and no fiber.

Lets Start Loosing Weight

By carefully considering the following information, you will have made the first step towards a happy, energetic, “fat-free” life.

First Big Thought:

Considering the nutritional “emptiness” of refined foods, and bearing in mind the fact that most people have a very high intake of refined foods, it is more than obvious that restricted diets are just what most people do not need.

Second Big Thought:

Refined foods may fill our stomachs, and they may please our palates, but they do very little to satisfy the nutritional needs of the body. As such, the use of refined foods will always result in an urgent message being sent to the brain, one that we cannot help but to hear, but one that we will almost always misinterpret: This message from the body to the brain is a desperate cry for more nutritious food, yet we will almost always interpret this message as a cry for more food – and that is where most weight problems begin. Thus the use of refined foods locks us into a vicious cycle, a vicious cycle that forces us to eat more and more of the very foods that satisfy the appetite less and less.

Third Big Thought:

To cut a long story short, refined foods such as white flour, white bread, white rice, etcetera, and all products that are made up of refined foods, quickly land up in the blood stream as sugar. This sugar whips a normally tired pancreas into action in a desperate attempt to clear this sugar overload from the blood stream, and to get it accepted into the body cells. Thus we land up with a mega load of carbohydrates that the body has no other option but to convert into fat. Need I say more?

Fourth Big Thought:

Carbohydrates that are not refined are known as complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are high in fiber. On their journey through the intestines, the fiber, which is a calorie in itself, absorbs other calories and these calories are carried out of the body via the stools. High fiber foods make good sense, therefore, because they prevent the body from absorbing all of the calories in your food – which is certainly not the case with refined products such as sugar and white flour products.

When we use refined carbohydrates such as white sugar, white pasta, white bread etcetera, the carbohydrates (calories) are not bound up with fiber and, as such, they pass rapidly and directly through the intestinal walls into the blood stream where they wreak havoc on the pancreas and the adrenal glands, and more, and the body’s only solution is to store these excess carbohydrates or sugars as fat.

Then, to make matters worse, we will use energy drinks, soft drinks, and flavored waters freely, all of which are high in carbohydrates and extremely low on vitamins, minerals and trace elements, and again these refined carbohydrates will move directly into the blood stream, and again, in desperation, the body will store them as fat.

In a nutshell, therefore, this is why so many people are having a problem with appetite and with weight gain, this is why the USA is being labeled as an “obese nation,” and this is why food refining is so good for business – after all, if the food you sell never satisfies the nutritional needs of the nation, and if it leads to all sorts of cravings and an insatiable appetite, this will mean that people have to eat more, and this can only mean fat profits for the food industry (excuse the pun).

It makes good sense, therefore, as the first step in any diet, to turn our backs on refined foods for they come with a heavy price (excuse the pun). While it may take a few days for your taste to adjust to whole foods, we strongly suggest that you consider the substitutions outlined in the table below. Believe me, this simple substitution program really works.

May you be encouraged by the thought that you do not have to eat less, you only have to eat better. Then you will discover that the name of this diet is perfectly justified, for when you eat right your food will satisfy like never before and you will actually reach a stage where you will not be able to overeat. Then you will eat as much as you like because you will “like” (choose) to eat only enough to satisfy your body’s nutritional needs.

So go for natural whole foods and forget about dieting.

See you at the tailor.

Let us take a journey back in time – to the beginning of your own journey through life – that journey which began in your mother’s womb . . .

Just four weeks after you were conceived, your brain could have been recognised, your heart and intestinal tract were being formed, your arms and legs were already visible as stumps, and your kidneys were already well developed – that is, after just 28 days.

By week five you were less than one centimeter long, your head was half the length of your body, and yet your heart had begun to pump.

By week six, nerve connections were linking up at the rate of 250,000 connections per minute – that is, no less than 360 MILLION nerve connections per day.

At this time your eyes and ears were already well formed, your mouth had taken shape, and your skeleton had begun to form. Yet, remarkably, you had been in existence for just 42 days.

By week seven your stomach was secreting digestive acid and your fingers and toes were well differentiated.

In less than two months, you had been transformed from a single cell into a fully functional human being?

How could this remarkable transition take place in just 60 days? What does this tell us about that original cell? What does this tell us about the Designer of that original cell? Was it a “simple” cell, as some are inclined to think of it? Clearly, there simply is no such thing as a simple human cell!

Today that original cell has replicated (sub-divided) itself into over 100 trillion cells. That’s right, today you are made up of over . . .

100,000,000,000,000 cells.

By some process unknown to science, certain of these cells were destined to become immune cells, others to become brain cells, others to become blood, lymph, tissue or nerve cells, others again combined to form the various organs of the body, each organ to serve its unique function in the various systems of the body.

These systems, in turn, are so interdependent that it is impossible for any system or group of systems to function without the others. Imagine the brain functioning without oxygen provided by the lungs. Imagine the muscles contracting without energy made available from food absorbed by the digestive tract. Imagine the transportation of energy to all the muscle cells without blood plasma and the circulatory system.

Ultimately, however, all of these systems work to provide for the needs of the body cells out of which they had their beginnings and from which they are composed. For example, the respiratory tract enables the body to obtain oxygen needed by all the cells. The digestive system provides the amino acids, glucose, and other raw materials needed by all the cells. And the kidneys, lungs, bowels and skin all work tirelessly to excrete the waste products produced by the cells during the process of energy production.

Residing in the nucleus of each of your cells is what is known as DNA. This is the code of your life – the genetic information that drives every step along the pathway from fertilized egg to adult. DNA carries the record of your anatomical and physiologic makeup, and the manual of all body structures and functions – including the code of everything you inherited from your parents.

In one single cell there are some 6 BILLION “steps” of DNA. In computer jargon we might say that the DNA in one microscopic cell contains some 6 billion bytes (“digits”) of intelligent information.
That is . . .

6,000,000,000 bytes of information per cell

`The amount of information that could be stored in a pinhead’s volume of DNA is staggering. It is the equivalent information content of a pile of paperback books 500 times as tall as the distance from Earth to the moon, each with a different, yet specific content.’ (Royal Truman, www.trueorigin.org/dawkinfo.htm)

`The instructions in one DNA molecule, if spelled out in words, would fill several sets of encyclopedias. Despite this enormous amount of information, the physical amount of DNA is small. Some estimate that the DNA of all five billion people alive today could fit into a teaspoon.’ (Dr. William Dysinger, Heaven’s Lifestyle Today, p.16)

Remarkably, the DNA in one cell is a mirror copy of the DNA in every other cell in your body – yet you are absolutely unique in that your DNA is unlike the DNA of any other person on our planet.

What else can we conclude from all this but that you carry around in your body a mind-boggling mega-load of information – a mega-load that is equivalent to 100 trillion computer hard drives, each of which is stored to capacity with 6 billion bytes of intricately “pre-programmed” information?

100 trillion x 6 billion = ?????

That is the sum total of all the information that it takes to run your marvelous, incredible, amazing, fantastic, miraculous life – and this is not just mumbo-jumbo type of information, but extremely complex information that is constantly drawn upon in a perfectly coordinated and impeccably organized fashion in order to meet the uncompromising needs of the body.

Whichever way we look at it, there is just no getting away from the obvious – you are a masterpiece of creation – infinitely complex, awesomely intricate, bewildering in design, wonderful beyond words – a miracle of the very first order.

This being the case, do we not owe it to ourselves to study this miracle, and to make every effort to meet the needs of this miracle? Should our first priority in life not be to saturate our minds with knowledge that will help us to preserve this miracle, and to keep it healthy, that we might enjoy the true wonders of being truly alive?

Our Philosophy On Food

We have often considered how tiny seeds develop into large, fruit-bearing trees; how dry old branches bring forth succulent fruit – in abundance; how earth and water and sun work together to bring forth food for the needs of earth’s creatures – in abundance; how natural foods are filled with essential nutrients – in abundance, how foods bring forth seeds – in abundance, and our contemplations have forced us to conclude that the processes of Nature, besides being incredibly generous, are as miraculous as the processes that sustain human life.

Behind this super-abundance of mind-boggling evidence, we see a Master-mind and a master-design wherein it was determined that the foods of Nature would be master-crafted for the needs of the human system. In other words, we see that natural foods were tailor-made to satisfy the needs of the life-miracle.

What can we expect, therefore, when we take Nature’s perfect foods and we refine them, ultra-heat treat them, genetically modify them, radiate them, manipulate them, and then put them back together in stupendous combinations that burden the system and that fail to meet the needs of life? Is it any wonder that those who depend on these processed and adulterated “foods” lose their vitality, suffer from chronic constipation, develop systemic toxemia, soon fall ill, and soon fall prey to all kinds of mental, hormonal and systemic imbalances?

It is our studied belief that when science respects Nature’s Ideal, it is in fact true science, but when “science” manipulates food for the sake of profits and solely in the interests of industry (shelf life, “mouth-feel,” convenience, and sales), and the vital needs of the life miracle are taken for granted, then such “science” is no more than a brand of folly that is directly responsible for much of the human suffering that we see all around us today.

It is for reasons such as these that we at Nature’s Choice respect Nature’s Ideal, for we believe that it is only by so doing that we can honestly claim to respect you, both as a person and as a customer. We believe wholeheartedly that you are a miracle, and that you are what you eat. As such, we accept the tremendous responsibility that devolves on us as suppliers of that which you eat.

Please rest assured, therefore, that whatever we distribute from our factory is in fact Nature’s Choice?

Bon appetite! We are at your service – always.

If you would like to learn more about this miracle, and how you can care for it, we strongly suggest that you read the Disease-Free book at this link.

Editor’s Note: Very often, people who improve their lifestyle and diet are surprised in that, soon after making the improvements, they experience cough and colds – sometimes even for weeks on end. This is especially the case with those who have lived a very intemperate life in the past, and who then make many improvements over a short space of time. This article explains why this reaction is what some might term “a necessary evil.” If you have not already done so, it would be a good idea to read the article on the nature of disease before you consider the following.

As you work at strengthening and cleansing your body, your system will regain its vitality. Then, as your vitality improves, your body will sense that it finally has the energy and the ability to engage in certain housekeeping tasks that it never quite had the vital reserves to carry through in the past. As the naturopathic writer, George Teasdale, tells us, . . .

`By the time a man reaches forty years of age living on a civilized diet, he may have stored away in his body upwards of twenty pounds of mucous. When he discontinues the intake of catarrh forming foods, the life forces within him commence to break down and eject this large accumulation of virus.’ (Nature Heals!, p. 29).

And just how will the body “eject this large accumulation” of virus/mucous/impurities? By way of a cold, a cough, sneezing, short-lived skin blemishes, etcetera. What this means is that just when most people would think that they should feel better than ever before, they might just find themselves experiencing a sudden upsurge in the frequency of their acute ailments – but only for a short while.

As Dr. Jensen explains . . .

`In the nature cure way of treating [disease], a discharge that is dormant in the body may again become active, and the patient may become alarmed, but when nature is cleaning house she stirs up latent, encapsulated conditions that will gradually eliminate themselves through the bloodstream and the eliminative organs. In the process of cleansing, Nature is breaking down the stored-up toxic material that has developed in the body from the use of drugs, vaccines, injections, and generally bad living habits. Those who do not understand nature’s way of ridding the body of toxins through a discharge, do not understand that when a drug is given to suppress this discharge, they are interfering with nature’s way of ridding the body of toxic waste. The elimination of toxins by the body is referred to as, “the Healing Crisis.” ‘ (Bernard Jensen D.C.,N.D., The Science and Practice of Iridology, p. 164 )

Once we understand the true nature of disease, those who wish to improve their health will understand that a short spell of suffering might well be unavoidable. In fact, the healing crisis is often a rocky path that we simply have to traverse if we wish to reach the summit of good health.

So what can you expect when you first start following the Nature’s Way programme?

The healing crisis can manifest itself in various ways, but there is usually catarrhal elimination, accompanied by any of the following: headache, boils, skin rash, sore joints, retention of water (edema), mild fever and/or stiff muscles. In fact we might even relive some of our old ailments and pains, especially those that were suppressed by drug medications. Diarrhoea, bad breath, and minor skin blemishes can also present for a short while as the body seeks every means possible to cleanse itself.

If you have lived a reasonably healthy, active life, and your body is in a fairly good condition, chances are you will not experience any undue discomfort when you start out on this programme. If you have lived intemperately in the past, however, and you have been in the habit of taking drugs to suppress your acute ailments, your system is likely to be burdened with a considerable level of toxic impurities. If this accumulation is more than your eliminative organs can cope with, then Nature will have to call to her aid her good and faithful housemaids – namely, the common cold, the cough, etcetera, to assist her in her cleansing efforts.

Those younger in years may develop inflamed tonsils. But here we need a special note of caution. We must remember that the tonsils are important components of the lymph system and that, as such, they play
a vital role in the cleansing processes of the body. When they are inflamed, it is a sign that the body is backed up with toxic impurities and, as such, inflammation of the tonsils is not necessarily an indication that the tonsils should be surgically removed. In most cases it is simply sure proof that something in the lifestyle and/or diet needs changing. As Dr. T. Hartley-Hennessey, A.R.C.A., tells us . . .

`In many countries enjoying modern civilization, almost every law of nature is now violated. Under modern conditions, if a child is taken to hospital suffering from inflamed and discharging tonsils, not only are the tonsils, which are doing their job magnificently, amputated, but the child is returned home in the same condition of life which produced the disease. No change is made.’ (Healing by Water, p. 186)

So the message here is that if a child has inflamed tonsils, our first need is to seek by every means possible to detoxify the child’s body – a process that will certainly include the drinking of lots of water in-between meals, hot baths followed by skin rubs, a mild herbal laxative or enema for four or five days, a daily drink of activated, granulated charcoal, a liberal daily dose of vitamin C and other anti-oxidants, and a switch to high-fibre natural foods – preferably vegetarian. Then the parents need to ensure that sweets, refined junk foods and sugary, preserved drinks are totally excluded from the child’s intake. By removing the cause, and cleansing the system, the inflammation should soon subside – and expensive, painful surgery will thus be avoided.

At first the Healing Crisis may sound like a cruel quirk of Nature, but once we understand the true nature of disease, and how the body, in its all-wise economy, is always looking for opportunity to cleanse itself, and how it will only do this when it has the vital reserves to carry it through, we come to realize that there are times in life when we have to get `sick’ in order to get well. Quite simply, we cannot expect to get well for as long as excessive toxic impurities are backed up in the system – and very often the only way that the body can eliminate this encumbrance is through the process of acute `dis-ease.’ This is why, as George Teasedale suggests, . . .

We need to `be patient with Nature, even though her efforts at house cleaning are disagreeable. By persistent continuance in well doing the body will be cleansed of its toxic accumulations, and the discharges will finally and permanently cease.’ (Nature Heals!, p. 29).

Under normal circumstances, wisdom, perseverance, and sometimes a few natural remedial agencies, are all that are needed to aid in our recovery from a healing crisis. At such times there is usually no need for alarm for, as Dr Jensen assures us, . . .

`It takes a reserve to go through a healing crisis, and the body will not produce a crisis unless it is able to go through with it.’ (The Science and Practice of Iridology, p. 33)

Yet we should still be cautious, especially if we suspect that our immune defenses are low, and especially if we have lived a very intemperate life in the past. If at any time you feel even slightly alarmed at the symptoms that you are experiencing, do not hesitate to seek counsel from a naturopath or a suitably qualified, diet-oriented health professional. Do mention to him or her that you have recently improved your living habits and that you suspect that you might be experiencing a healing crisis.

A Brief Overview

Part 1: The listing below will help you to match your symptoms to a possible deficiency, overdose or excess. Please carefully read the instructions below.
Part 2: The information at this link will show you which foods are high in the particular nutrient that you suspect you might be deficient in.

Could Your Symptoms be Related to
a Deficiency, an Overdose or an Excess?

Introduction:

This is a simple, logical, step-by-step utility aimed at helping you and your nutritional counselor to identify, to overcome, and to avoid the more prominent of the many nutritional imbalances. This information is supplied as a guideline only. It is not a complete listing, and it is not intended to replace the advice of a suitably trained health professional.

Please bear in mind that the fact that your symptom could be related to a particular imbalance does not mean that it is related to that imbalance. In other words, your condition could have some other cause. You should always discuss the outcome of your research together with a suitably qualified health professional.

Important Note:

If you are taking any medicinal drug, first check the insert that comes together with your prescription to see if the drug is not known to cause your particular symptom and/or imbalance. If it does, then bring this to the attention of your prescribing physician, or a nutrition-oriented health professional, who will suggest appropriate action.

Instructions:

On a clean piece of paper, make a list of the more prominent symptoms that are troubling you – with the most prominent at the top of the list. Having done so, search for each of these symptoms in the listing below (see search instructions below) and jot down on your symptom list, next to the applicable symptom, the possible deficiencies, overdoses or excesses that could be causing each symptom.

This exercise might reveal that a number of symptoms are associated with the same deficiency, or overdose, or excess. Whether this is the case or not, once you have used the listing below to research each of your more prominent symptoms, click here and follow the instructions.

If a particular symptom has many suggested causes, your best approach is to include more whole foods in your diet – especially nuts (in moderation), seeds (in moderation), and whole grain cereals and porridges. Nature will get out of natural foods just what she needs, and you should feel an improvement in no time at all. We highly recommend Nature’s Choice IncrEdibles (a super-cereal) and Nature’s Choice Miracles Plus (a seed mix).

How To Search The Listing:

The listing below is alphabetically arranged by body part or condition.

You may . . .

(a) scroll through the list using your up/down or PageUp/PageDown keys, . . .

(b) or click on EDIT-FIND, and type in your search argument, . . .

(c) or press the CTRL key and the F key together, and type in your search argument.

Please note that, wherever applicable, the body part is listed first, then the symptom or condition. For example, we have used Abdominal Bloating instead of Bloated Abdomen. The best search argument to use in this case, however, would be “bloat”, as this search argument would find all entries containing “bloating” and “bloated.” To find all references to the abdomen, for example, type in “Abdom” as this search argument will find both “abdomen” and “abdominal.”

You might already be aware of this fact, but everyone who follows a diet and/or a lifestyle that is not the “norm” will be called a fanatic or an extremist by someone at some time. This is, as they say, par-for-the-course.Perhaps it is just human nature, sometimes it is just ignorance, often it is nothing more than a means of suppressing conviction, but the fact remains that dietary reform almost always attracts the fanatic/extremist label from some quarter.

Do not become discouraged, therefore, when this label is hung on you and/or your loved ones – and, more importantly, always respond with a smile. Sometimes people react in this way only because they do not know what you know. When they do know what you know, they will probably do as you do.

Does this not mean that we are challenged to help our “accusers” to know what we know? As such, we should kindly, tactfully, patiently work at informing them, and soon they too will have taken a step for better health – and they will one day thank us for our patience and our gentle guidance.

As health reformers, our goal is not to see how different we can be, but to see how kind, accommodating, and how caring we can be – despite our differences. What we eat and what we do is our choice in life, helping others to feel comfortable with their choices, and with ours, is our privilege in life.

So always put on a healthy dose of patience and tolerance, and try and meet everyone where they are. Reform is always progressive and, as such, we must make allowance for others – just as we had to make allowance for ourselves in times past when our own convictions demanded changes that we were not quite ready to make.

More often than not, the very ones who call you a fanatic will be those who are literally eating themselves to death, or drugging themselves to death. At such times you will be sorely tempted to confront them impatiently with all the scientific facts. But, in truth, we need to feel very sorry for people who are intent on depriving themselves of the rewards of a healthful lifestyle and diet. By keeping this thought in mind, you can turn your feelings of impatience into feelings of deep sympathy and kindness and, with such feelings, you will be well equipped to help your “accusers.”

Try as you will, though, you will not be able to persuade some folk to turn from their wrong habits. This is especially the case with the older generation. Do not allow the situation to cause animosity, however. We must choose to enjoy the friendship and love of others – even if they choose to eat their way into the grave. Always remember that genuine kindness and genuine concern will often do in a moment what argument and scientific fact will fail to do in a lifetime.

We consider that the article following is a must-read for all who take to the path of healthful living and eating.

Avoiding Extremes

Not all who profess to believe in dietetic reform are really reformers. With many persons the reform consists merely in discarding certain unwholesome foods. They do not understand clearly the principles of health, and their tables, still loaded with harmful dainties, are far from being an example of temperance and moderation.

Another class, in their desire to set a right example, go to the opposite extreme. Some are unable to obtain the most desirable foods, and, instead of using such things as would best supply the lack, they adopt an impoverished diet. Their food does not supply the elements needed to make good blood. Their health suffers, their usefulness is impaired, and their example tells against, rather than in favor of, reform in diet.

Others think that since health requires a simple diet, there need be little care in the selection or the preparation of food. Some restrict themselves to a very meager diet, not having sufficient variety to supply the needs of the system, and they suffer in consequence.

Those who have but a partial understanding of the principles of reform are often the most rigid, not only in carrying out their views themselves, but in urging them on their families and their neighbors. The effect of their mistaken reforms, as seen in their own ill-health, and their efforts to force their views upon others, give many a false idea of dietetic reform, and lead them to reject it altogether.

Those who understand the laws of health and who are governed by principle, will shun the extremes, both of indulgence and of restriction. Their diet is chosen, not for the mere gratification of appetite, but for the upbuilding of the body. They seek to preserve every power in the best condition. The appetite is under the control of reason and conscience, and they are rewarded with health of body and mind. While they do not urge their views offensively upon others, their example is a testimony in favor of right principles. These persons have a wide influence for good.

There is real common sense in dietetic reform. The subject should be studied broadly and deeply, and no one should criticize others because their practice is not, in all things, in harmony with his own. It is impossible to make an unvarying rule to regulate everyone’s habits, and no one should think himself a criterion for all. Not all can eat the same things. Foods that are palatable and wholesome to one person may be distasteful, and even harmful, to another. Some cannot use milk, while others thrive on it. Some persons cannot digest peas and beans; others find them wholesome. For some the coarser grain preparations are good food, while others cannot use them.

Those who live in under-developed countries or in poverty-stricken districts, where fruits and nuts are scarce, should not be urged to exclude milk and eggs from their dietary. In the case of persons whose blood-making organs are feeble, – especially if other foods to supply the needed elements cannot be obtained, – milk and eggs should not be wholly discarded. Great care should be taken, however, to obtain milk from healthy cows, and eggs from healthy fowls, that are well fed and well cared for [free-range]; and the eggs should be so cooked as to be most easily digested [poached, hard-boiled or soft-boiled].

The diet reform should be progressive. As disease in animals increases, the use of flesh foods, milk and eggs will become more and more unsafe. An effort should be made to supply their place with other things that are healthful and inexpensive. In this light, people everywhere should be taught how to cook without flesh foods, milk and eggs, so far as possible, and yet have their food wholesome and palatable.

The practice of eating but two meals a day is generally found a benefit to health; yet under some circumstances persons may require a third meal. This should, however, if taken at all, be very light, and of food most easily digested. Wholewheat crackers – the English biscuit – or zwieback, and fruit, or cereal coffee, are the foods best suited for the evening meal.

Some are continually anxious lest their food, however simple and healthful, may hurt them. To these let me say, Do not think that your food will injure you; do not think about it at all. Eat according to your best judgment; and be at rest.

Because principle requires us to discard those things that irritate the stomach and impair health, we should remember that an impoverished diet produces poverty of the blood. Cases of disease most difficult to cure result from this cause. The system is not sufficiently nourished, and dyspepsia and general debility are the result. Those who use such a diet are not always compelled by poverty to do so, but they choose it through ignorance or negligence, or to carry out their erroneous ideas of reform.

To care for the body by providing for it food that is tasty and strengthening is one of the first duties of the householder. It is far better to have less expensive clothing and furniture than to stint the supply of food.

All should learn what to eat and how to cook it. Men, as well as women, need to understand the simple, healthful preparation of food. Their business often calls them where they cannot obtain wholesome food; then, if they have a knowledge of cookery, they can use it to good purpose.

Carefully consider your diet. Study from cause to effect. Cultivate self-control. Keep appetite under the control of reason. Never abuse the stomach by overeating, but do not deprive yourself of the wholesome, palatable food that health demands.

The narrow ideas of some would-be health reformers have been a great injury to the cause of health reform. Health reformers should remember that dietetic reform will be judged, to a great degree, by the provision they make for their tables; and instead of taking a course that will bring discredit upon it, they should so exemplify its principles as to commend them to candid minds.

There is a large class who will oppose any reform movement, however reasonable, if it places a restriction on the appetite. They consult taste instead of reason and/or the laws of health. By this class, all who leave the beaten track of custom and advocate reform will be accounted radical, no matter how consistent their course. That these persons may have no ground for criticism, health reformers should not try to see how different they can be from others, but should come as near to them as possible without the sacrifice of principle.

When those who advocate hygienic reform go to extremes, it is no wonder that many who regard these persons as representing health principles reject the reform altogether. These extremists frequently do more harm in a short time than could be undone by a lifetime of consistent living.

Health reform is based upon principles that are broad and far-reaching, and we should not belittle it by narrow views and practices. But no one should permit opposition or ridicule, or a desire to please or influence others, to turn him from true principles, or cause him lightly to regard them. Those who are governed by principle will be firm and decided in standing for the right; yet in all their associations they will manifest a generous spirit and true moderation.

Selection of Food

Realizing the importance of the role that food plays in the vital processes of life, the selection and preparation of food should be considered as amongst life’s highest priorities. Those foods should be chosen that best supply the elements needed for building up the body. In this choice, appetite is not a safe guide. Through wrong habits of eating, the appetite might well have become perverted. Often the appetite demands food that impairs health and causes weakness instead of strength. We cannot safely be guided by the customs of society for the simple reason that the disease and suffering that everywhere prevail are largely due to popular errors in regard to diet.

Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the foods best suited to the needs of the human system. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet.

But not all foods wholesome in themselves are equally suited to our needs under all circumstances. Care should be taken in the selection of food. Our diet should be suited to the season, to the climate in which we live, and to the occupation we follow. Some foods that are adapted for use at one season or in one climate are not suited to another. So there are different foods best suited for persons in different occupations. Often food that can be used with benefit by those engaged in hard physical labor is unsuitable for persons of sedentary pursuits or intense mental application. Nature has supplied us with an ample variety of healthful foods, and each person should choose from it the things that experience and sound judgment prove to be best suited to his own necessities.

Nuts and nut foods play an important role in the diet. With nuts may be combined grains, fruits, and some roots, to make foods that are healthful and nourishing. Care should be taken, however, not to use too large a proportion of nuts. Those who realize ill effects from the use of nut foods may find the difficulty removed by attending to this precaution. It should be remembered, too, that some nuts are not as wholesome as others. Almonds are preferable to peanuts, but peanuts in limited quantities, used in connection with grains, are nourishing and digestible.Persons who have accustomed themselves to a rich, highly stimulating diet have an unnatural taste, and they cannot at once relish food that is plain and simple. It will take time for the taste to become natural and for the stomach to recover from the abuse it has suffered. But those who persevere in the use of wholesome food will, after a time, find it palatable. Its delicate and delicious flavors will be appreciated, and it will be eaten with greater enjoyment than can be derived from unwholesome dainties. And the stomach, in a healthy condition, neither fevered nor overtaxed, can readily perform its task.

If we plan wisely, that which is most conducive to health can be secured in almost every land. The various preparations of rice, wheat, corn, and oats are sent abroad everywhere, also beans, peas, and lentils. These, with native or imported fruits, and the variety of vegetables that grow in each locality, give an opportunity to select a dietary that is complete without the use of flesh meats.

Wherever fruit can be grown in abundance, a liberal supply should be prepared for winter, by canning or drying. Small fruits, such as currants, gooseberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, can be grown to advantage in many places where they are but little used and their cultivation is neglected. For household canning of these products and other fruits, glass, rather than tin cans, should be used whenever possible. It is especially necessary that the fruit for canning should be in good condition.

Wherever dried fruits, such as raisins, prunes, apples, pears, peaches, and apricots are obtainable, it will be found that they can be used as staple articles of diet much more freely than is customary, with the best results to the health and vigor of all classes of workers. There should not be a great variety at any one meal, for this encourages overeating and causes indigestion.

It is not well to eat fruit and vegetables at the same meal. If the digestion is feeble, the use of both will often cause distress and inability to put forth mental effort. It is better to have the fruit at one meal and the vegetables at another. The meals should be varied. The same dishes, prepared in the same way, should not appear on the table meal after meal and day after day. The meals are eaten with greater relish, and the system is better nourished, when the food is varied.

Preparation of Food

It is wrong to eat merely to gratify the appetite, but no indifference should be manifested regarding the quality of the food or the manner of its preparation. If the food eaten is not relished, the body will not be so well nourished. The food should be carefully chosen and prepared with intelligence and skill.

For use in bread-making, the superfine white flour is not the best. Its use is neither healthful nor economical. Fine-flour bread is lacking in nutritive elements to be found in bread made from the whole wheat. It is a frequent cause of constipation and other unhealthful conditions.

The use of soda or baking powder in bread-making or baking is harmful and unnecessary. Soda causes inflammation of the stomach and often poisons the entire system. Many housewives think that they cannot do without soda, but this is an error. If they would take the trouble to learn better methods, their baked goods would be more wholesome, and, to a natural taste, it would be more palatable. Grains used for porridge or “mush” should be well cooked (60 – 120 hours). But soft or liquid foods are less wholesome than dry foods, which require thorough mastication. Zwieback, or twice-baked bread, is one of the most easily digested and most palatable of foods. Let ordinary raised whole wheat bread be cut in slices and dried in a warm oven till the last trace of moisture disappears. Then let it be browned slightly all the way through. In a dry place this bread can be kept much longer than ordinary bread, and, if reheated before using, it will be as fresh as when new.

Far too much sugar is ordinarily used in food. Cakes, sweet puddings, pastries, jellies, jams, are active causes of indigestion. Especially harmful are the custards and puddings in which milk, eggs, and sugar are the chief ingredients. The free use of milk and sugar taken together should be avoided.

If milk is used, it should be thoroughly sterilized. With this precaution, there is less danger of contracting disease from its use. Butter is less harmful when eaten on cold bread than when used in cooking; but, as a rule, it is better to dispense with it altogether. [Fermented] cheese is still more objectionable; it is wholly unfit for food.

Scanty, ill-cooked food depraves the blood by weakening the blood-making organs. It deranges the system and brings on disease, with its accompaniment of irritable nerves and bad tempers. The victims of poor cookery are numbered by thousands and tens of thousands. Over many graves might be written: “Died because of poor cooking;” “Died of an abused stomach.”

It is a sacred duty for those who cook to learn how to prepare healthful food. It takes thought and care to make good bread; but there is more religion in a loaf of good bread than many think. There are few really good cooks. Young women think that it is menial to cook and do other kinds of housework, and for this reason many girls who marry and have the care of families have little idea of the duties devolving upon a wife and mother.

Cooking is no mean science, and it is one of the most essential in practical life. It is a science that all women should learn, and it should be taught in a way to benefit the poorer classes. To make food appetizing and at the same time simple and nourishing, requires skill; but it can be done. Cooks should know how to prepare simple food in a simple and healthful manner, and so that it will be found more palatable, as well as more wholesome, because of its simplicity.

Every woman who is at the head of a family and yet does not understand the art of healthful cookery should determine to learn that which is so essential to the well-being of her household. In many places hygienic cooking schools afford opportunity for instruction in this line. She who has not the help of such facilities should put herself under the instruction of some good cook and persevere in her efforts for improvement until she is mistress of the culinary art.

Regularity in eating is of vital importance. There should be a specified time for each meal. At this time let everyone eat what the system requires and then take nothing more until the next meal. There are many who eat when the system needs no food, at irregular intervals, and between meals, because they have not sufficient strength of will to resist inclination. When traveling, some are constantly nibbling if anything edible is within their reach. This is very injurious. If travelers would eat regularly of food that is simple and nutritious, they would not feel so great weariness nor suffer so much from sickness.

Another pernicious habit is that of eating just before bedtime. The regular meals may have been taken; but because there is a sense of faintness, more food is eaten. By indulgence this wrong practice becomes a habit and often so firmly fixed that it is thought impossible to sleep without food. As a result of eating late suppers, the digestive process is continued through the sleeping hours. But though the stomach works constantly, its work is not properly accomplished. The sleep is often disturbed with unpleasant dreams, and in the morning the person awakes unrefreshed and with little relish for breakfast. When we lie down to rest, the stomach should have its work all done, that it, as well as the other organs of the body, may enjoy rest. For persons of sedentary habits, late suppers are particularly harmful. With them the disturbance created is often the beginning of disease that ends in death.

In many cases the faintness that leads to a desire for food is felt because the digestive organs have been too severely taxed during the day. After disposing of one meal, the digestive organs need rest. At least five or six hours should intervene between the meals, and most persons who give the plan a trial will find that two meals a day are better than three.

Wrong Conditions of Eating

Food should not be eaten very hot or very cold. If food is cold, the vital force of the stomach is drawn upon in order to warm it before digestion can take place. Cold drinks are injurious for the same reason; while the free use of hot drinks is debilitating. In fact, the more liquid there is taken with the meals, the more difficult it is for the food to digest; for the liquid must be absorbed before digestion can begin.

Do not eat largely of salt, avoid the use of pickles and spiced foods, eat an abundance of fruit, and the irritation that calls for so much drink at mealtime will largely disappear.

Food should be eaten slowly and should be thoroughly masticated. This is necessary in order that the saliva may be properly mixed with the food and the digestive fluids be called into action.

Another serious mistake is eating at improper times, as after violent or excessive exercise [or study], when one is much exhausted or heated. Immediately after eating there is a strong draft upon the nervous energies; and when mind or body is heavily taxed just before or just after eating, digestion is hindered. When one is excited, anxious, or hurried, it is better not to eat until rest or relief is found.

The stomach is closely related to the brain; and when the stomach is diseased, the nerve power is called from the brain to the aid of the weakened digestive organs. When these demands are too frequent, the brain becomes congested. When the brain is constantly taxed, and there is lack of physical exercise, even plain food should be eaten sparingly. At mealtime cast off care and anxious thought; do not feel hurried, but eat slowly and with cheerfulness, with your heart filled with gratitude for the blessings of life.

Many who discard flesh meats and other gross and injurious articles think that because their food is simple and wholesome they may indulge appetite without restraint, and they eat to excess, sometimes to gluttony. This is an error. The digestive organs should not be burdened with a quantity or quality of food which it will tax the system to appropriate.

Custom has decreed that the food shall be placed upon the table in courses. Not knowing what is coming next, one may eat a sufficiency of food which perhaps is not the best suited to him. When the last course is brought on, he often ventures to overstep the bounds, and he takes the tempting dessert, which, however, proves anything but good for him. If all the food intended for a meal is placed on the table at the beginning, one has opportunity to make the best choice.

Sometimes the result of overeating is felt at once. In other cases there is no sensation of pain; but the digestive organs lose their vital force, and the foundation of physical strength is undermined. The surplus food burdens the system and produces morbid, feverish conditions. It calls an undue amount of blood to the stomach, causing the limbs and extremities to chill quickly. It lays a heavy tax on the digestive organs, and when these organs have accomplished their task, there is a feeling of faintness or languor. Some who are continually overeating call this all-gone feeling hunger; but it is caused by the over-worked condition of the digestive organs. At times there is numbness of the brain, with disinclination to mental or physical effort.

These unpleasant symptoms are felt because nature has accomplished her work at an unnecessary outlay of vital force and is thoroughly exhausted. The stomach is saying, “Give me rest.” But with many the faintness is interpreted as a demand for more food; so instead of giving the stomach rest, another burden is placed upon it. As a consequence the digestive organs are often worn out when they should be capable of doing good work.

Where wrong habits of diet have been indulged, there should be no delay in reform. When dyspepsia has resulted from abuse of the stomach, efforts should be made carefully to preserve the remaining strength of the vital forces by removing every overtaxing burden. The stomach may never entirely recover health after long abuse; but a proper course of diet will save further debility, and many will recover more or less fully. It is not easy to prescribe rules that will meet every case; but, with attention to right principles in eating, great reforms may be made, and the cook need not be continually toiling to tempt the appetite.

Abstemiousness in diet is rewarded with mental and moral vigor; it also aids in the control of the passions. Overeating is especially harmful to those who are sluggish in temperament; these should eat sparingly and take plenty of physical exercise. There are men and women of excellent natural ability who do not accomplish half what they might if they would exercise self-control in the denial of appetite.

Many writers and speakers fail here. After eating heartily, they give themselves to sedentary occupations, reading, study, or writing, allowing no time for physical exercise. As a consequence the free flow of thought and words is checked. They cannot write or speak with the force and intensity necessary in order to get their point across; their efforts are tame and fruitless.

Those upon whom rest important responsibilities should be men and women of keen feeling and quick perception. More than others, they need to be temperate in eating. Rich and luxurious food should have no place upon their tables.

Every day men in positions of trust have decisions to make upon which depend results of great importance. Often they have to think rapidly, and this can be done successfully by those only who practice strict temperance. The mind strengthens under the correct treatment of the physical and mental powers. If the strain is not too great, new vigor comes with every taxation. But often the work of those who have important plans to consider and important decisions to make is adversely affected by the results of improper diet. A disordered stomach produces a disordered, uncertain state of mind. Often it causes irritability, harshness, or injustice. Many a plan that would have been a blessing to the world has been set aside, many unjust, oppressive, even cruel measures have been carried, as the result of diseased conditions due to wrong habits of eating.

Here is a suggestion for all whose work is sedentary or chiefly mental; let those who have sufficient moral courage and self-control try it: At each meal take only two or three kinds of simple food, and eat no more than is required to satisfy hunger. Take active exercise every day, and see if you do not receive benefit.

Strong men who are engaged in active physical labor are not compelled to be as careful as to the quantity or quality of their food as are persons of sedentary habits; but even these would have better health if they would practice self-control in eating and drinking.

Some wish that an exact rule could be prescribed for their diet. They overeat, and then regret it, and so they keep thinking about what they eat and drink. This is not as it should be. One person cannot lay down an exact rule for another. Everyone should exercise reason and self-control, and should act from principle.

All who understand the laws of health should realize their obligation to obey these laws – for we ourselves must suffer the results of violated law.

Introduction

The primary focus of this article is on appetite control, but the principles discussed will benefit everyone. Thanks to widespread ignorance as regards basic dietary rules and principles, the following rather lengthy introduction is considered necessary.

——————————————

It is one of the high points in life when we come to the realization that we, as humans, are masterpieces of creation. No computer will ever come anywhere near the intricacy of the human mind. No man-made contrivance will ever match the reasoning powers of the human mind. No data storage system will ever perform anywhere near as brilliantly and efficiently as one microscopic human cell and, size for size, no man made “hard drive” will ever hold as much data as one tiny human cell. Nothing that any laboratory will ever produce will possess such instinctive wisdom. No machine will ever be made that will perform what the human body can perform, and certainly no machine will ever be made that is self-regenerating, self-cleansing, and self-healing.

Every moment of every day, everything within us is striving for harmony and perfection. Every cell, organ, nerve and tissue is dedicated to serve, to co-operate, and to obey. Every moment of every day, messages are relayed back and forth from the mind to every part of the body, from organ to organ, from cell to cell, from nerve to nerve, and from the body back to the mind – electrical messages, chemical messages, sensory messages, and hormonal messages. Within every one of us there is a communications network that is so intricate that it makes the World Wide Web look like an infant’s toy. Every moment of every day, everything within us is listening attentively for the next message – waiting – eagerly waiting for an opportunity to contribute towards the functioning and the wellbeing of this miracle that we call “life.”

In recent decades, however, vested interests have introduced an unsuspecting public to a vast array of “foods,” chemicals and thought patterns that have had a devastating effect on the human machinery – so much so that all too many people now drag themselves through life, feeding the miracle on bad foods, bad news (TV) and depressing thoughts – eating only for taste, drinking only for taste and for pleasure, and living only to gratify the senses. And those who should be warning them are all but silent and/or caught in the same web. And all the while the living machinery loses its efficiency, runs on low energy levels, and the messages that are so vital to coordinated bodily function become somewhat muffled and misunderstood.

We have even arrived at a time when powerful advertising campaigns are convincing an all-too-gullible consumer that tea and coffee are healthy, that hydrogenated margarine is good for the heart, that sugar is a wonderful source of energy, that any product that contains an anti-oxidant or a little fiber will promote health and/or prevent cancer – regardless of the other constituents of the product? And all the while disease marches on – fed by the fires of profit-mongering, and vigorously stoked by ignorance.

“Well,” you might ask, “what has all this got to do with the control of appetite?” The answer is, “Plenty.”

Some may not have realized this, but an uncontrollable appetite is a message – it is usually the loud cry of an insulted body, it is the desperate pleading of violated nature, and it is most certainly a warning of worse to come if this desperate loud-cry is not heeded.

While many people would interpret the pleadings of appetite as being little more than a cry for more food, in the majority of cases today an insatiable appetite is a cry for more nutritious food – a cry for more natural food. This is especially the case in this “modern” age where so many foods on our supermarket shelves are hopelessly lacking in vital nutrition. You may read about these dietary pitfalls at the The Natural Health Foundation’s website.

If appetite is a problem, therefore, it is time for us to consider our diets. Have we been deceived by pretty boxes and fancy food packaging? Are we trying to thrive on foods that are made up of little more than refined white sugar, refined white flour, and refined, hydrogenated (plasticised) fats - and sometimes a smattering of frozen vegetables and/or chemically doused meat? Are we oblivious to the fact that our “food” today is a far cry from what Mother Nature intended? Are we fooling ourselves into believing that our lives will not be affected by the free and continual use of foods that have been doused in a wonderful array of flavourants, preservatives, colourants, coagulants, texturizers, tenderizers and various other chemicals such as MSG that fool our taste buds – and that thus ensure that we buy the same product the next time we go shopping? Do we seriously believe that if it tastes good it is good?

Oh yes, such foods may fill the stomach, and they may well satisfy the taste buds, but they are often only a little more nutritious than the boxes in which they are packaged and, as such, they cannot possibly satisfy the body’s needs.

Little wonder, therefore, that our appetites are never satisfied, little wonder that the human family today are so prone to overeating, little wonder that people have a tendency to nibble all day, little wonder that office workers start fantasizing about the mid-morning tea-trolley half an hour after breakfast, little wonder that people dream about food all night, and go on sugar and tea and coffee binges throughout the day. Most of these people are not gluttons – they are simply suffering from malnutrition because they are unwittingly trying to survive on what some would label as “non-food.” They are eating more and more of foods that can only satisfy the needs of the system less and less – hence the uncontrollable appetite.

The endless cry of the appetite, therefore, is seldom a matter of a disordered mind, or the symptom of a depressed state, or the throwback from our forbears. Most often, an insatiable appetite is little more than a prominent symptom of a malnourished body.

If you are having a problem with appetite, if you are a yo-yo dieter, if you need to lose weight – and you hate the idea of fasting or dieting, the accompanying simple, step-by-step programme will prove a great blessing to you.

Follow this programme one step at a time, and do not pressurize yourself. Food is intended for your enjoyment, and the closer you come to using natural foods, the more you will enjoy your meals, the less you will be inclined to overeat, and the happier you will become.

Please be advised that this is not an overnight remedy – for the results of many years of wrong eating cannot be reversed in a day. Like the sunrise, it does promise a new day, however, and that new day will dawn slowly and surely – and there will be no going back . . .

Continue to Part 2 . . .

Step 1: Switching to Whole-Foods

In the light of the introduction, this is an easy and a logical step, one that will have many other benefits besides the control of your appetite. You will never regret having followed this step.

At the Natural Health Foundation website you will find a substitution programme that will turbo charge your life. You will not be able to make all the substitutions in a day or even a month, but every substitution made will improve your vitality.

Please note – we are not suggesting that you give up anything, only that you should start substituting healthy foods and habits for unhealthy foods and habits.

The following statement by Dr Roger Williams, though not directly related to the subject in question, is included in the hope that it will motivate you and that it will help you to realise the importance of eating and living in harmony with natural law.

“If all prospective human mothers could be fed as expertly as prospective animal mothers in the laboratory, most sterility, abortions and premature births would disappear. Deformed and mentally retarded babies would be largely a thing of the past.” (As quoted by Dr. Michael Sharon, Complete Nutrition, p.155, 156)

Step 2: Mobilizing Your Bowels

The use of denatured foods undermines the entire human system and leads to various problems – including problems with digestion and assimilation. Eventually the bowel can become caked with a layer of what is known as post-putrefactive matter (material that has gone beyond the putrefactive stage) . This hard, rubber-like formation in the bowels hinders the absorption of nutrients from food (via the bowel wall). Once this situation arises, and it often does, our nutritional uptake will be somewhat hindered and our “appetite” will never be properly satisfied. You can read more about the dangers of this condition by clicking here.

Once you appreciate why it is important to mobilize your bowels, you can consider the various ways and means of doing this by studying the article – “Overcoming Constipation“.

Step 3: More Raw Foods in the Diet

Cooked foods can “sustain” life – for a while – but only for a while. It is doubtful, however, whether a diet that is made up mostly of cooked foods is able to regenerate cells and to improve overall health. The main problem being, of course, that cooking destroys many of the essential nutrients and all of the enzymes in our food. In short, therefore, cooked food, to the exclusion of raw food, is unable to adequately nourish the system. This means that cooked food is unable to fully satisfy the appetite.

As one writer suggests . . .

“Preserve the health and increase the strength by avoiding the large amount of cooking that is filling the world with chronic invalids.” (E. G. White, Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 460)

A mainly raw diet, on the other hand, will “help you lose weight, feel fitter and younger; it will also give you a sense of super vitality and a greater resistance to stress, tiredness and disease.” (Leslie & Susannah Kenton, Raw Energy, p.13)

We need to understand that the human palate can be trained to enjoy almost any natural food. If we live on spicy curries for a few months, we will lose any relish for simple fare. By the same token, if we live on an abundance of raw foods, we will reach a point where our taste buds will crave raw foods. This is the goal to be aimed at, therefore, to gradually increase the amount of raw food in the diet and thus gradually educate the palate towards a more natural fare.

We are not recommending that you should live solely on raw foods but, having met a few “rawtarians” (people who live on raw foods only), we must confess that they certainly were a picture of vitality and that they all looked almost half their years.

One particular lady “rawtarian” that we had the pleasure of meeting must have been in her mid-fifties at the time of our meeting, and yet she had the skin and the natural radiance and energy of a sixteen year old. Perhaps her most outstanding characteristic was the deep sense of peace that radiated from her presence.

It has been suggested that the average meal should be made up of 75% raw food and 25% cooked food. For the uninitiated this will take some doing, yet we believe that it is an ideal that is worth working towards – one that will pay handsome dividends in good health, good looks, good feelings - and a deeply gratified appetite.

Step 4: Taking Advantage of The Gag Reflex

When we eat natural foods, that is, foods that have not been refined, cooked or otherwise processed, they bring into play what is known as the gag-reflex. The is an appetite-restricting instinct that is triggered by natural foods and that makes it virtually impossible for one to overeat.

Have you ever tried to over-indulge on dates, or grapes, or bananas, or whole-grain products? One reaches a point where you “gag” and you simply cannot take another bite.

Those who are struggling with appetite can take advantage of this natural instinct by eating a salad or some raw fruit before eating the cooked part of the meal. This will cause the gag-reflex to kick in after the raw food and the tendency to overeat on cooked food will be suppressed.

The gag reflex is nature’s way of helping us to know when enough is enough – but it only ever comes into play with the use of raw foods – which fact tells me that raw foods are the foods that Nature intended for us. (Have you discovered any record of an oven or a hot plate in the garden of Eden?)

Step 5: Home Grown is Gold

Perhaps one of the nicest things that we can do for ourselves, and for our loved ones, is to have a little vegetable garden in the back yard. The very taste of home grown vegetables will convince you that they are nutritionally superior.

When last did you eat a tomato that was not grown on chemically fertilized soil? The difference in taste and color (and obviously nutritional value) between an organically grown tomato and one that has been grown on artificially fertilized soil is astounding.

Remember that, as with humans, so it is with plants – the more we respect Nature, and the better we prepare the soil in which the plant is established, the greater will be the plant’s natural resistance to disease and to insect pests, the better will be the volume and quality of the yield, the better it will taste, the more nutritious it will be, and the more it will tend to satisfy the appetite.

Even if you manage nothing else, why not try a little bed of easy-to-grow crops, such as broad beans, peas, tomatoes and carrots. In fair to good soil, broad beans grow like weeds. Yet the green broad bean makes the most delicious stew (cooked with fresh cream and herbs – absolutely my favorite meal). Have you ever eaten fresh young peas out of the garden and tasted what the Creator really intended for peas to taste like?

Our recommendation for those who are struggling with appetite, therefore, is that you always try and avail yourself of Nature’s best – and Nature will see to the rest.

Step 6 – Conscious Chewing

Few people realize what an important function our saliva plays in the process of digestion. Besides other functions, the ptyalin in saliva converts carbohydrates into simple sugars and thus prepares the food for the further processes of digestion.

The only way we can get our saliva thoroughly mixed in with our food, however, is through proper chewing. This step alone will make a huge difference to those who are struggling with appetite for the simple reason that appetite is satisfied, not only by the quality and quantity of food that we eat, but also by the length of time that the food remains in the mouth.

Make a point, therefore, of eating slowly and chewing well – and this will soon become a habit.

An excellent idea is to train yourself only to load your fork once you have swallowed the previous mouthful. If you wish to count the number of times that you chew then, depending on the type of food, 30 times is a good average yardstick.

Food processors in the home are a boon, but beware that you do not use them to excess. Do not allow the processor to do the work that your teeth are intended to do. If you do use a “sloppy” food, such as blended fruit, mousse, or porridge, never make it too sloppy, and always make it a practice to add something chewy such as nuts, raisins or seeds to the dish. If circumstances do not permit you to do this, then consciously “chew” sloppy foods anyway. Freshly squeezed fruit juice, which is the only fruit juice we recommend, should also be “chewed.”

Remember that Nature presents the apple, the nut, the grape, et cetera, in the ideal form, with the ideal consistency, and with the perfect combination of components for best digestion. The further we move away from Nature’s ideal, the harder it will become to satisfy the appetite, the more we will be inclined to overeat, the greater will be the burden placed on our digestive system, and the more we will be predisposed to constipation – our number one enemy.

Step 7: Avoiding Casual Mealtimes

It is essential that mealtimes should be relaxed occasions. Under no circumstances should negative or unpleasant topics be discussed at mealtimes. We should also not watch TV or read while eating. Treat mealtimes as quality time with the family and give all your attention to the family and the food. Subconsciously, this will put the brakes on our tendency to “gobble” our food down.

Nevertheless, while mealtimes should be relaxed, they should always be treated as special occasions. It is not a good idea to stand around the kitchen eating. Rather, take the trouble to set the table as attractively as you can – even for breakfast – and, via your senses, and the mood created, your appetite will be partly satisfied – even before you start to eat..

Always remember that what is pleasing to the eye is also pleasing to the appetite – for much of the pleasure in eating comes via the eye.

Step 8: Too Many Surprises Lead to Over-indulgence

If you are serving more than one course, always present all the courses on the table before starting the meal, with each course nicely served and neatly laid out before each individual.

Too often, after eating our fill on the main course, a tempting pudding is brought in from the kitchen, together with a host of tempting dainties, and it becomes almost impossible not to over-indulge. Had the pudding and the other dishes been visible throughout the meal, we could have made a wise decision as to how much to eat of the other courses.

Doing this will also help to satisfy the “visual appetite” in that, when we have a clear mental picture of the quantity of food that we have eaten, we will be better able to fortify our reasoning powers in the sometimes formidable task of convincing the appetite that we have had an elegant sufficiency.

Those who are having a real struggle to stop overeating should take very special note of the latter point. Even if you live alone, do not start eating until the entire meal is neatly laid out before you. Before starting to eat, you must satisfy yourself that what is set out before you is sufficient to sustain life and to see you through to the next meal. Now eat slowly, with gratitude, and chew until the food becomes liquid in the mouth. When the set meal is over, immediately leave the table, brush your teeth with an aluminium-free toothpaste and go for a short brisk walk. Once your teeth are brushed, any unnatural desire for food will quickly abate.

The easiest way to lose control of yourself is to nibble while the meal is being served, or to start scratching in the nut, biscuit and bread containers after the meal. This is the downfall of many.

Do not under any circumstances place a huge pile of cookies in the center of the table as a free-for-all after the meal. This only encourages over-indulgence. If cookies are to be served as the sweet, place one or two cookies in each person’s side-plate before the meal begins – and then put the cookie jar back in the kitchen. Make sure you only use wholefood cookies that have been prepared without sugar. At Nature’s Choice we prepare a wide variety of such cookies – speak to your nearest stockist.

Remember, a full plate can either be enough or too much – depending on the size of the plate. Dispense with large platters and do yourself a real favour. It is far better to serve a light helping on a small plate and then to have a small second helping if this is felt to be necessary. The break between helpings will also slow down the rate of eating, and give the gag-reflex time to kick into action.

Western society considers it to be etiquette to remain at the table until all have finished eating. However, those who are working at gaining the victory over appetite should come to an arrangement with family and/ or friends who love to spend long hours indulging in dainties after the meal. If you present your case with tact, nobody should feel offended if you excuse yourself once you consider that you have eaten enough This may not be the accepted norm in some homes, but it is fair and reasonable.

Step 9: Colours and Combinations.

As mentioned earlier, visual stimulus always helps to satisfy the appetite. With this in mind, you should plan your meals in such a way that there are always a variety of colours on the plate. Attractive colour combinations, with greatest contrasts opposite each other, are also able to partly satisfy the appetite even before the meal begins. If it looks good to the eye, a measure of satisfaction will be transmitted to the mind and to the entire system. It is amazing what a small sprig of parsley, or a slice of boiled egg, or a slither of red or green pepper, or a lettuce leaf can do to the appearance of a meal.

Obviously, we should also ensure that the starter (which should not feature too often), the main course, and the pudding, are as different in colour as possible. Having these neatly laid out before the meal starts, will do more than anything to pre-gratify the appetite.

When planning your meal, always take a moment to also consider the consistency of the foods chosen. There should always be a balance between chewy, crisp and soft foods. When serving a stew of soft consistency for instance, make sure that there are at least two chewy vegetables or salad greens to go with it.

Then again, we should watch the consistency of the starter, the main meal and the pudding. Serve a chewy biscuit after a stew, rather than a soft creamy pudding. If you are having soup, do not choose a mousse for pudding etcetera.

It should be borne in mind that sloppy foods are not best for health, as they are made up largely of liquid. Such foods are usually swallowed without being sufficiently chewed, and the liquid will dilute our digestive juices and will also suppress the flow of saliva. More than this, the entire meal will have to remain in the stomach until such time as all the liquid has passed into the intestines – which can lead to acidity and indigestion.

Step 10: Too Many Acid-forming Foods

An acid system is a sick system, and a sick system cannot assimilate our foods properly. If our foods are not properly assimilated, our appetite will never be properly satisfied, regardless of the quantity or the quality of food we eat. A sick system will also be less able to cope with our excesses.

This again emphasizes our need for a raw salad before each meal. Besides being chewy, and besides their action on the gag-reflex, salads are generally alkali-forming, and they would thus counteract the high acid-forming tendency of flesh foods (which should be eaten sparingly, if at all), as well as the low acid-forming tendency of grains.

Freshly picked, fully ripened fruits are usually alkali-forming. Today, however, so many of our fruits are picked while still green that they too may be slightly acid-forming.

This is one reason why we should avoid commercial salad dressings in any manner or form – for they are invariably made up of an horrendous combination of vinegar, spices, pepper and hydrogenated oils. A number of natural alternatives are included on this website.

People with an acid system may find it hard to control their tempers. They tend to be restless, irritable and hard to get along with. Because their nervous system is all fired up, they may also suffer from insomnia.

For your information: Millet is an alkaline grain, potatoes are an alkaline vegetable – as are most vegetables, and almonds are an alkaline nut. Make sure you include these in your diet. Dandelion root is an alkaline herb – which may be taken as a tea together with a little honey or stevia. Celery juice and carrot juice are alkaline. Lemon juice is metabolized in the body to an alkaline ash and should be used in place of vinegar – which is a low grade alcohol. Once inside the body all fruit becomes alkaline if it is tree ripened and consumed correctly.

We include the following extracts to help you to better understand he condition that is known as acidosis.

`Whether a man dies at eight or eighty, his death is the result of a preponderantly acid condition of the body. This is caused by the quality and the quantity of the food that is eaten, the way in which it is eaten and the incompatibility of the mixtures that are eaten.

`So nearly universal amongst civilized peoples is the condition known as acidosis, that chronic acidosis is said to be the one cause of all diseases. It is the basic factor in catarrhal afflictions, the prime cause of rheumatic and arthritic conditions, the source of nerve degeneration, muscular atony, arterial deterioration, and it reaches its grand climax in causing faulty functioning of all the vital organs.

`The texture of the skin improves with the quality of the blood. Glasses can be dispensed with. Hearing becomes more acute. Colds are less frequent. The senses of smell and taste improve. Fears and evil forebodings are dispelled. Life is happier in all its aspects when excess acids are expelled from the body.

`Certain mineral elements produce an acid reaction in the body while others are alkaline in effect. Sodium and potassium, for instance, are the two great alkaline-producing elements. They are especially favored by the sun in growing plants. We have learned that the sun is the source whereby sodium is fixed in our plant life, and fruit that does not get enough sunshine will not be completely matured and will not be alkaline enough to satisfy the needs of the body. One reason why so many persons develop acid conditions in the body is that the immature fruits and vegetables that they buy are low in sodium content.’ (Bernard Jensen D.C.,N.D., The Science and Practice of Iridology, p.336)

Step 11: Regular Daily Mealtimes

Allow your system to become accustomed to eating at the same times every day, and then eat only at those times. By doing this, the system will become strengthened, and will be better able to digest and to assimilate your food.

Getting your system accustomed to regular mealtimes, and making sure that the system is satisfied with natural foods at these times, will eventually result in your stomach only calling for food at the accustomed time – instead of all the time.

Step 12: Depleted Bodily Energy Levels

If the body is weak, the digestive system will be weak. A weak digestive system cannot metabolize or assimilate food properly and, as such, the appetite will not be easily satisfied. This will lead to over-indulgence which, in turn, will further weaken the system. And thus we create a vicious cycle.

Therefore, contrary to what some might believe, weak people should not eat freely, for this will only further debilitate an already weak system. Weak people should rather consult a dietician about an easily digested natural food diet – and about the advisability of fasting.

Nothing strengthens the system, and especially the digestive organs, more efficiently than half an hour to an hour of digging in the garden every day – especially if this is in the sunlight – and you take the necessary precautions.

If you like to eat heartily – and I do believe that many of us do – then you must be prepared to exert yourself more than might normally be necessary in order to burn up the excess energy – and also to build up extra bodily energy.

Nothing, however, can improve on a balanced lifestyle, which would include a moderate food intake, plenty of rest, daily sunshine, and a reasonable amount of daily exercise.

Good luck – and remember – respect Nature, and she will do the rest.

Twas a dangerous cliff, as rugged as any,
yet to walk near its edge was so pleasant
that over the side had fallen so many
a duke, and many a peasant.

To fund the solution the people did pledge,
but their projects did not at all tally.
To some the need was a fence on the edge
to others, `an ambulance in the valley.’

But the cry for the ambulance carried the day,
for it spread to the neighboring city.
A fence may be useful enough they did say,
but the injured need attention and pity.

`The problem is not the cliff’ they said,
`nor is it the slipping or dropping.
It isn’t the slipping that hurts the head
but the shock down below when they’re stopping.’

So the money came in, the Pounds and the Pence
from the dwellers in highway and alley,
not to purchase a safety fence,
but an ambulance down in the valley.

So day after day as the people did fall,
quick forth the white coats would sally,
to care for the victims – one and all,
with the ambulance down in the valley.

Then a wise one remarked, `its a marvel to me,
that people give far more attention,
to repairing results, when the cause you can see,
is what is needing prevention.’

`Let’s get up the cliff and put up a fence,
come neighbors and friends let us rally.
By stopping the cause we can surely dispense
with the ambulance down in the valley.’

`Oh he’s a fanatic,’ they all agreed,
`Dispense with the ambulance – no never.
Let us give ear to the highly degreed,
for surely they are the more clever.’

`See how their skills are daily dispensed,
with wisdom and grace and speed?
Ignore these extremists who want the cliff fenced,
when an ambulance is all that we need.’

So may this sad story come to all ears,
of how many with best of intention,
have wasted their years and lavished their tears,
on treatments instead of prevention.

But a sensible few, who are practical too,
will not bear with this folly much longer.
To them it is sure, preventions better than cure,
and their party will soon be the stronger.

So join us in climbing the cliff dear friend,
and let’s put up the poles and the fence,
Let’s save our fellows from so terrible end,
and from wasting their Pounds and their Pence.
