The Candy Shop Syndrome

Category: Health News

`Candies and soft drinks are practically a symbol of our culture. They come in innumerable shapes, colors and flavors, and are available everywhere, in dazzling wrappers, waiting to be picked up by eager children. Logical explanations about the health risks of refined sugar carry little weight with a child who is face to face with a shelf full of “goodies.” Children respond to emotion, not to logic. Grannies and aunts, unconsciously competing for the child’s love, contribute their share of sweet, colorful junk. Few people ask themselves: Is this going to distort Tom’s taste buds? Is this going to addict him to sugar? ruin his teeth? hamper his scholastic achievement? predispose him to a whole cluster of diseases in later life?`A well-known pediatrician once wrote: “If school authorities want to stop discipline problems and vandalism in the classroom, they must . . . close the candy stores within two miles of the school.” Unfortunately, the chances of this happening are rather slim. There is no way of imposing restrictions on the huge candy industry. Their lobby is influential. However, within the home, this powerful lobby can be rendered powerless by intelligent, patient and caring parents who set a personal example by avoiding naked calorie foods.’ (Dr. Michael Sharon, Complete Nutrition, p.158)
