Summers Best Thirst-Quencher: Coconut Water!!!

28 October 2016

Coconut water has been popular as a “Health” beverage for a few years now and it is definitely here to stay, rather than just being a health fad. This is because this naturally isotonic drink is the REAL DEAL and delivers when it comes to nutrients and taste!

Natures Choice Coconut water comes from the juice found in the centre of a young green coconut and helps to nourish the flesh surrounding it. It is not from the brown husky coconuts you will see on the supermarket shelves.

It should also NOT be confused with coconut “milk” which is made by adding the water to grated coconut meat and is high in fat and creamy in texture. Coconut water is produced naturally in the fruit and contains 94% water and very little fat, plus the average coconut provides between ½ to a full cup of water.

Coconut water has a “viscous” consistency and contains not only fibre but Vitamin C and several other very important minerals. Some studies have shown that it is possible to improve oxidative stress through regular consumption of coconut water because of its high mineral content.

Research has also shown that coconut water can lower blood sugar levels and improve other health markers in diabetic animals. In addition, it is a good source of magnesium, which has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and decrease blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes.

It may be also be a great beverage for keeping blood pressure under control as it contains an impressive 600 mg of potassium in 8 oz (240 ml). Potassium has been shown to lower blood pressure in people with high or normal blood pressure.

Of course Coconut Water is no “wonder drug” but it does seem that there is plenty of evidence to suggest it can help support a healthy lifestyle because of its many health attributes.

One of the main reasons coconut water has become popular is because it is excellent at restoring hydration and replenishing electrolytes lost during exercise. Electrolytes are minerals that play several important roles in the body, including maintaining proper fluid balance. Two independent studies found that coconut water restored hydration after exercise better than water and equal to high-electrolyte sports beverages (20, 21). Because of its low sugar content it makes the perfect drink for kids during or after their school sporting events.

However before you head out and purchase liters of coconut water it’s very important to read the label as all coconut waters are not equal! Make sure there are no flavourings, added sugars or anything else that shouldn’t be in there!

You can use your coconut water in smoothies, chia seed pudding and vinaigrette dressing or substituted for plain water whenever you want a bit of natural sweetness or just as a refreshing and filling drink!
